Heart disease is an umbrella term for a number of different diseases affecting the heart. As of 2007, it is the leading cause of death in the United States, England, Canada and Wales, killing one person every 34 seconds in the United States alone.
The blood vessels consist of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins. All blood is carried in these vessels. The arteries, which are strong, flexible, and resilient, carry blood away from the heart and bear the highest blood pressures. Because arteries are elastic, they narrow (recoil) passively when the heart is relaxing between beats and thus help maintain blood pressure. The arteries branch into smaller and smaller vessels, eventually becoming very small vessels called arterioles. Arteries and arterioles have muscular walls that can adjust their diameter to increase or decrease blood flow to a particular part of the body.

Niacin For Lowering Cholesterol - How Much is Enough?  

A typical, successful amount of niacin to reduce cholesterol is 3000 mg per day, but there are certain precautions you should take.

Other studies of both men and women have found that niacin increased HDL and LDL cholesterol transforms from the sticky apo-A form for the lighter, less harmful apo-B form. Taking beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium, however, reduced the benefits of niacin.

If you decided to use niacin /nicotinic acid to reduce cholesterol, you should consult your doctor for advice. That is because a number of things can go wrong when you nicotinic acid in doses potent enough to have an effect on cardiovascular health:

  • How statin drugs, niacin sometimes damage the liver. Hepatitis was detected by the dosage as low as 500 mg per day for a period as short as two months, although most cases of liver damage occurred when the dosage was 3000 to 9000 mg for several years.

May niacin lower cholesterol for people who do not or choose not to use statins, niacin, but should always be used under professional supervision.
